Aaron Peters studied the documents for the twentieth time and considered his options.

He was still in Tunisia, liaising with a Tunisian anti-terrorism squad. The locals had located the safehouse of the cell that had planted the nightclub bomb. They launched a surprise raid and for once caught The Order unprepared. The two operatives in the house immediately trashed the laptops they were working on, flushed their phones down the toilet, and bit down on cyanide capsules, but in their haste they had missed another phone in one of the bedrooms, probably left by the man Aaron had killed on the beach.

Back at the Tunisian anti-terrorism squad’s HQ, Aaron ran some decryption software and soon hacked into it. He found no one in the contacts list. The man had obviously memorized any numbers he needed.

Aaron did find some texts, though. Most were incomprehensible, a mishmash of acronyms, abbreviations that could stand for more than one word, and oblique references.

One stood out, though.

“Taranto. Cleaning team. J&J.”

His blood curdled as he read it.

J&J. Jacob and Jana?

It dated from yesterday. The “cleaning team” (which could mean only one thing) was probably already there.

Taranto? Assuming the operative hadn’t misspelled Toronto, the Canadian city, he meant Taranto, Italy.

Taranto … Taranto … why would they go there?

He had never been there, and he didn’t recall any CIA operations there, but then again he had been off in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan for several years and had little touch with operations in other sectors.

The important thing was that Jacob and Jana were headed there, and The Order knew about it.

He needed to get there as soon as he could, be he had the feeling that he wouldn’t make it in time.

He’d have to call in the cavalry. Aaron put in a call to the CIA station director in Rome.

The local operatives backed by the Italian authorities could take care of it. Hopefully. He’d get on the first plane, though.

No way was he going to sit here in Tunisia while his daughter and mentee got targeted by The Order.
